Spanish for You! ~ Review

Spanish for You Logo photo spanishforyoulog_zpsa3fadef7.jpgWe were picked to review Fiestas from Spanish for You! and I was excited to see my name on the list for this review. I have wanted the girls to learn a second language and I have a hard enough problem speaking English that I knew if I tried to teach Spanish I would butcher the language. The program recommends using with children in grades 3-8, but I thought I could tweak it a bit for Leann, who is in 1st grade. Knowing that there was an audio file for the whole book and it was a native speaking person and that I was being provided with a lesson guide to follow, I thought I got this!!

Spanish for You - Fiestas photo spanishforyou-fiestas_zpsa80f3c2a.jpg

ALL Spanish for You! packages come complete with:

  • soft cover book or e-book
  • 24-30 week lesson guide for the grades you need (24 weeks for G5-6 & 7-8, 30 weeks for G3-4) (PDF download)
  • self-checking worksheets (PDF download)
  • audio files of entire book (includes bonus audio of native speaker of entire book) (MP3 download)
  • flashcard/activity pictures (PDF download)

Price:

For the complete package grades 3-8 is $64.95

Or you can purchase the separate grade levels (3-4, 5-6, 7-8) for $39.95

Extra Books $12.95 each, Teacher lesson plans are $12.95.

The suggested schedule is 3-4 days per week or you could take it a bit slower if you needed too.

During the review process we received a email from Debbie Annett letting us know that they have reconfigured the placement of the audio downloads for better organization and that all the worksheets are now in folders according to grades, and that all the audio files are now in folder according to the lessons.

This was the biggest problem for us. Since we had minimum Spanish  knowledge it was a little difficult for us to use the lesson guides, trying to find the right worksheets and actually reading the lesson guide. The native speaking audio while it was helpful to actually hear how it was suppose to sound, we had a hard time actually understanding what she was saying.

We also seemed to mix up the worksheets, since they are not numbered and at that time they were not grouped in files according to grades. The changes that were made to the downloads we make finding the correct worksheets easier.

We thought that the concept of immersing yourself into a unit study on a particular subject would make learning a second language easier. It is also nice that you can use this product with multiple grade levels. I would definitely recommend not starting this until your child is reading. Maybe this is why they start in 3rd grade!

Progeny Press ~ Review

 photo 26018_10150154187290243_4120345_n_zpsd9393f12.jpg

Progeny Press is a family owned family ran business that combines Christian perspectives with  classic cultural literature. They produce study guides for literature and currently have 107 guides available. We were able to review  Treasure Island Study Guide, which sells for $16.99 for an instant download or CD. You can get the printed version for $18.99

photo a64739513876c78eaae8f5_m_zpsc345c325.jpgWe received the instant download which comes in a PDF which allows the student to type the answers directly on the worksheet, which helps keep costs down with printing. But we actually printed the pages and had Amber work on them by herself, then she would share what she had learned with Leann and I. So that way Leann still felt as though she was participating with us. They recommend reading the whole book before starting the study guide. We read through the book before and reread the chapters that pertained to that weeks study guide. The guide is divided into 6 different parts by grouping the chapters: 1-6, 7-12, 13-15, and so forth. There is a separate answer guide for the parents.

There are PreReading Activities to do and Amber had so much fun learning about the different types of money, she actually calculated what Daddy would make is he was paid in Quid, Fourpenny, Farthings, and Pieces of Eight.  Which to her was pretty cool!

Each part of the guide has a Vocabulary section, a Question section, a Thinking about the Story section,  and then a Dig Deeper section. Each part of the guide really goes into what you have read and makes sure that you understand what you read.

Amber liked how the guide was divided into different sections, so that it was easier for her to go back and review those chapters before answering the guide. She don’t like writing so much so the oral discussions we had helpedo make answering the questions easier too.

Recommended grades for this study is 7-10. Amber is in 6th grade and had no problem with doing the work. Leann who is in 1st grade was able to participate with us in the oral discussions and listening to the story when we read it.

Knowledge Quest ~ Review

 photo 61867_10151551915578243_1408297526_n_zpsc18fa83b.png

This month we have been aloud reading Sacagawea (Brave Explorers Every Child Should Know) from Knowledge Quest. Knowledge Quest is known for their history and geography curriculum so I knew that this would go right along with our study of American History. We received the complete E-Book in a PDF format, the cool part of this book was that interactive links. While reading the book from the computer, I was able to click on the links and show the girls what we were talking about.

The girls had a real good laugh at me trying to pronounce all the Indian names. They enjoyed hearing all about Sacagawea’s life, they would grab their blankets, (how else would you listen/read a good book), and cuddle up on the couch as I would read to them. 224898_10200217495900265_2055582658_n Sometimes we would be so into reading that we would lose track of the time. They thought it was really funny how she would “talk”.  We even added a few project to do along with this book. Check out what we did here. This book gives an accurate account of Sacagawea’s life and her journey with Lewis and Clark.

I would recommend the book for all ages.

Sacagawea was written as 4 separate parts but you can get the complete Sacagawea Saga for only $4.97! photo SacagaweaBook_zps004a015c.jpg

Adventus~Review

 photo AdventusLogo_zps301dbe63.gif

Whenever I had heard someone talk about music lessons for their kids, I would turn green with envy. I have wanted to have the girls take piano lessons for years but as we all know being from a 1 income family we have to pick and choose what we can and can’t do. So when Adventus offered us the opportunity to review MusIQ HomeSchool I was over the moon!! Piano lessons at home, yea!

From Adventus website: “The seven-year curriculum includes 20+ levels for beginner to advanced intermediate piano students. The Lesson Plans include detailed lesson objectives, activity sheets, quizzes and assessments plus hundreds of helpful tips from experienced educators.” photo musiqhomeschool-software_zps4cb3ceea.jpg

I wondered if our keyboard was even compatible, and thankfully it is. I just needed to buy the adapter and we were all set. We were so excited to start practicing. Neither of the girls had taken any lesson so I figured we would start them both on Children’s Music Journey Volume 1. We soon realized that Amber even though she has not taking any lessons before was able to move up to Children’s Music Journey Volume 2 without any problems.

Set up was a bit confusing and there was a few hiccups along the way, for some reason Leann’s computer which has Windows 7 would not run the program, instead I had to installed it on Amber’s computer which has Windows 8. We were all set for the 1st lesson and for some reason the keyboard and the computer didn’t want to communicate right, so after a few minutes of frustration, I switched the cables around and it worked great. Funny thing is during the first lesson, Beethoven tells the student that he has trouble hearing, and when the computer and keyboard were not communicating, Leann says “Well he did say he had trouble hearing, maybe he just can’t hear me!” I was a bit confused as how the lessons went, and I was a bit discouraged when I had to go searching for the lessons. Maybe it was just me not knowing, everyone knows how I “just need to know everything” lol but once I figured it out it was smooth sailing.

Actually once I set it up there was no need for me to even be in the room with the girls as they did their lessons. I LOVED how they had a famous composers to teach them the new lesson, then they would get to go into the Practice Room with Ms. Melody to review what the teacher (composer) taught, after that they would get to play games in the Game Room, as they progress more games are unlocked. Then it was off to the Impro Room, by this point the lesson is completed, and you can spend a few minutes reviewing what was taught and doing the assigned worksheets. Actually we didn’t use the worksheets much, seeing as my girls don’t like to color and really the recommended age is 4-6 for CMJ-1.

The girls both LOVED this program and actually ask all the time to play the piano, even on Saturdays!! I would recommend this program. We plan to keep the program going even after our review period is over. I let the girls work at their own pace, even though Adventus recommends a lesson a week, I figured that since they are little bit older they could advance when they felt that they could move to the next lesson.

Abraham’s Journey – Review

Photobucket

This year we have focused on American History. I have really enjoyed teaching the girls all about how our wonderful country was built, the laws the govern it and the principles that it was founded upon.  Being offered the opportunity to review Abraham’s Journey: A Celebration of the American Dream by Inspiring the American Dream just seemed to flow right into our history lessons. It really complimented our lesson especially coming so soon after our field trip to a local museum to see the Smithsonian Traveling Exhibit of Journey’s Stories.

Abraham’s Journey: A Celebration of the American Dream tells the story of a young boy, who through his faith, imagination and entrepreneurial spirit, sets out to achieve the American dream.

The young man, Abraham goes on a journey to figure out how to raise money to help buy Christmas gifts (if your children believe in Santa you might want to skip the line about the parents not being able to buy gifts that year). Through Abraham’s journey he comes in contact with historical figures, (in the back of the book are short biographies so no need to go research them) that help him to figure out what the American Dream is all about.

Photobucket

So what is the American Dream? That was the question I asked the girls and they answered “To be able to do what I want and be successful at it!”  We talked about the vocabulary terms in the back of the book, I made it like a game, they had to ding in with the correct answer and they collected points for right answers, they really got into it then, I even had to come up with a few other question from the book to break the tie! The girls were pretty interested in the historical figures too. When a new character was introduced, they would stop and ask questions about each person. I LOVE when they get so involved in a story that they want to know MORE!!!!  I then asked “How did (insert historical figure)…. influence your life? Great discussions came next.

You can purchase the book for only $14.99 at  Inspiring the American Dream.

Age Range: All ages. My girls are 7 & 12 and they both enjoyed this book.

A+ TutorSoft Inc Review

Photobucket

When I saw that we were going to get to review 1st Grade Math, A+ Interactive MATH – Home School Edition for  A+ TutorSoft, Inc. I was super excited. I thought this will free up some extra time and hopefully challenge Leann. We reviewed 1st grade math, but they offer grades 1st – 6th with Pre Algebra and Algebra 1. You can choose from online or a CD versions.

The goal of the A+ TutorSoft is to help students of all ability and grade levels reach their educational potential by offering expert instruction that is engaging, easy to follow and easily accessible. Using a proprietary learning platform that combines voice, visual and text-based instructions, we make learning MATH easy.

Leann was excited to have her own online program that actually required that she do work on the computer.

2013-02-06_13-49-17_773[1]She seemed to do better with her headphones on. She actually listened better and would answer the teacher when asked a question.  She now “sees” patterns and can add quicker in her head since starting the program.

Ok, I’m getting ahead of myself. When you sign up you have to create a teacher profile and then you can then add students to your class. Once you have assigned the student to the right class, you can set up the worksheets and quizzes ( I didn’t do this, but if we were doing a higher grade I might have). Then you set up the student account. When I was setting everything up, it did take me a little bit to figure out my way around the website. But once I did it was very straight forward. I set up Leann’s account and I thought there might be a different sign in screen for the kiddos but no it’s the same as the parents/teachers page. There are a few pages you need to go through to actually get to the lessons. First the child signs in, then they need to click on their class, then they need to launch the class and finally they have their lessons20130221_220330-kdcollage[1] Once you reach the lessons, you pick the unit that you are working on. (The picture below shows Lesson 2.5) The lesson begins and a video starts. The voice in the lesson explains the concept, shows the concept and then asks questions. The pause in between the question and when the program gives the answer could be a bit longer and I did notice that the program always say your right and then gives the answer. There was a few times Leann said, “Mom, I didn’t answer and she said I was right!” Maybe a generic “Great Job” or “If you answered…” would be better. After the lesson is over, you have the option of doing the lesson again if you need more time, or you can do the Interactive Q & A,  which I really liked. They asked the questions and read the answers to the kid and you just picked the correct answer. It also told you if you answered correctly. Then it’s time to do the worksheets so you can get credit for completing the lesson. Unfortunately, the worksheets are not interactive, so your little one needs to be able to read the questions themselves or you need to help with the worksheets and the tests. You can also print out the worksheets for extra practice. Leann couldn’t wait to see how well she did at the end of the worksheets and tests.

Photobucket

Overall I think this program is great. The lessons are well received by Leann and she asks to do her math. There are a few glitches, but I’m sure that the development team is working them out. The tech support is very efficient and quick. (I lost my sign in info). Once you learn your way around the website everything is very straight forward. I would recommend this program!!

The cost of this interactive math program is: Monthly only $19.95, Quarterly only $49.99, Full Year only $124.99. Or you can sign up for a FREE 1 month trail and have your child take the Free placement test.

But for a limited time A+ TutorSoft, Inc. has decided to be very generous  and offer this wonderful coupon for 50% off, but you need to hurry because the offer is only good until the end of March!!!

Apologia Exploring Creation Reviews- Zoology 2

I was very excited to see my name on the list to review Apologia Educational Ministries. We were picked to use Apologia’s science curriculum Exploring Creation with Zoology 2: Swimming Creatures of the Fifth Day and Zoology 2 Notebook Journal. zoology-2 zoology-2-notebooking-journal

Prerequisites: Zoology 1 (even though you do not need to follow them in order)
Apologia’s second Zoology book will take you and your family on an exploration into the wonders of the swimming creatures made on the fifth day of creation.

We really had fun reviewing this product.  Apologia conveniently gives you a schedule in the beginning of the book. There are 13 lessons which are then divided into 2 weeks, having you do science twice a week, (but you could adapt it to fit your needs). You are also given a complete list of materials needed for the projects in the book (most are easily found around the house). During the week not only are the kids learning Science but they are doing English, Grammar, Reading, Handwriting, Bible, and cool experiments. What more could we ask for?
Oh yeah they also gave us a special course website with lots of helpful extras. Diving Deeper suggestions are given if you wanted to add just a bit more fun to your day/week.

When learning about zoology it’s only fair to plan a fieldtrip to SeaWorld. Luckily we purchased season passes (not necessary), that way to can continue to see what we are learning.

2012-06-10_12-38-42_7492012-06-10_12-47-14_612013-01-12_13-56-26_8572013-01-12_13-51-28_672

We had such a blast seeing the creatures we had read about in the textbook. I would recommend this product for families with elementary aged students.

How we used the material: I would read to the girls the lesson, (older elementary will be able to read themselves), then we would work on the notebooking pages together. We did experiments and watched movies from the Digging Deeper section, we also read a few of the books suggested for our weekly aloud reading. Finding the books and the movies were very easy at our public library.

So I’m sure the burning question you have is “How Much?”

The textbook is only $39.00 & the notebook is only $24.00 for a complete and full year of hands on science fun.

I think you are gonna LOVE this curriculum so much that you are gonna have to check out all the other subjects they have too. See what some of the crew is saying about Exploring Creation with Zoology 1, Exploring Creation with Zoology 3 and Exploring Creation with Human Anatomy and Physiology     Photobucket
