Science Naturally sent us One Minute Mysteries: 65 More Short Mysteries You Solve With Science! to review for them, and we were happy to read it.

  photo MysteriesMoreSciCoverFrontweb_0_zpse15319fb.jpg Price: $9.95

We decided to read this book aloud as a group. I really liked how the book was broken up into different sections; Life Science, Earth and Space Science, Physical and Chemical Science, General Science, there is a bonus section and then a excerpt of One Minute Mysteries: 65 Mysteries You Solve With Math! Guess who will be buying the Math book??!?!

Each story is really short, and I love that the front page tells the mystery and the answer is on the back of the page. So I would read the short excerpt and then ask the girls to solve the mystery. After we had discussed what we though the answer was I would turn the page and finish the story. It was really cool to “see” how much the girls had retained from previous lessons in science. There were quiet a few mysteries that sparked their interest and so off we would go to find answers to questions that had stemmed from these short mysteries. The one change the girls would have liked was if the stories were a little longer and if the pictures were in color. Besides that they LOVED it and can’t wait to start the Math version.

Eric & Natalie Yoder, this father-daughter team has got a winner here. This book is a great read for all ages, Leann age 7 enjoyed listening to the stories and figuring out the answers. We would recommend this book!!

Science Naturally has graciously offered our readers a special coupon: you can use coupon code 3SPEC to purchase any 3 books on the website for $19.95 plus $2.95 shipping. (a $12.90 savings). Pick out your books here!!

Home School in the Woods ~ Review

 photo HSitW-NewLOGO-website_zps0d8de564.gif

This past month we have been learning all about the Great Empires. We have been reviewing the Great Empires Activity Study from Home School in the Woods. We received the instant download, which includes the different empires starting with Egypt and goes through the USA. We printed up the timeline and the figures that go with each period.

   Prices : Download $18.95 or a CD $19.95

Each Empire comes with a text page that gives you a overview of that particular empire. There is a projects page that directs you as to which other pages you will need to print for each day.

We used this study each day. The first week we worked on Ancient Egypt, on the 1st day we printed up everything and went over the timeline, then we read the text. On the 2nd day we did some mapping, on the 3rd day watched a documentary on Ancient Egypt, on the 4th day we did some cooking egyptcooking and then on the 5th day we made a Cartouche complete with hieroglyphs.

Cartouche

This activity guide is a wonderful Unit Study!! It is so easy to use that anyone could do it and it is so much fun!! The girls can’t wait until we do world history each day. Here I was nervous about teaching them about world history since I wasn’t sure about what to teach and now I don’t have to worry about it. All I need to do is print up some pages, read a bit about that empire and then do some fun hands on projects.

The weeks that followed included; Ancient Greece, Ancient Rome, China. And of course they can’t wait to find out what going on with these empires; Arab-Muslims, Japan, Vikings, Mongols, England, Spain, Russia, France, Germany and the Untied States! We decided to follow the timeline and learn about each empire according to it but you could pick and choose which empire you wanted.

This guide is recommended for elementary ages. If you wanted to use it for middle school ages I would recommend using more of the Addition Reading Material list.

ABeCeDarin ~ Review

 photo abecedarianlogo_zps0ce11eae.jpg

How do you feel about teaching phonics? Since Amber learned to read while being in public school I didn’t have such a problem with it. But now Leann is a totally different picture.  Leann would rather be doing cartwheels or jumping on the trampoline instead of doing school work.GEDC0431

So when ABeCeDarian Company offered their product for review, I was like “Pick Me, Pick Me!!!”

ABeCeDarian is divided into 4 levels. It starts with nonreaders in Kindergarten and goes through to a 5th/6th grade reading level.

We received the package and of course the girls are super excited and meet the mailman in the driveway to take procession of the package. Then comes the begging of who can open it. We received levels A & B:

Student Workbook A1
Teacher Manual A1
Student Workbook A2
Teacher Manual A2
Set of 10 Storybooks
Student Workbook B1
Teacher Manual B1
ABeCeDarian Aesop

Price: The teacher’s manuals costs $28.50, and each of the student workbooks costs $12.25. The storybook collection is a set of 10 soft cover readers and costs $21.50.

First thing I take the Teacher’s Manuel and start reading the 42 pages of tiny print, well maybe it isn’t so tiny and I need to get my eyes checked, but after reading 42 pages of instructions I felt ready. I printed up the the materials needed (a free download). And set up our schedule, they recommend 4-5 times a week at 15-30 minutes a session, but we soon realized that the schedule is very adaptable. Each lesson is scripted so it makes it very easy for anyone to teach phonics. Since we have tried other phonics programs (without success) some of the lessons we were able to move through quickly, also I started Leann on A-1 because I wanted her to really get the feel of the program from the beginning.
Lessons consist of playing a word game, saying the sounds, writing the letters, and then progress in reading sentences, and spelling words. You can check out a lesson sample here.

So after reviewing ABeCeDarian, Leann is reading!! She doesn’t particularly like to read, but she is reading and let me tell you the first time she sat down on her own and read from the Bible, she had gotten tired of waiting for someone to help her read her daily devotions and decided to try to read it on her own, once she realized that she had actually read the words and understood what it had said she broke out in this big grin and said I DID IT!!!
