Science Naturally ~ Review

 photo 1100041v1v1_zpsa4dd1c29.jpg

Science Naturally sent us One Minute Mysteries: 65 More Short Mysteries You Solve With Science! to review for them, and we were happy to read it.

  photo MysteriesMoreSciCoverFrontweb_0_zpse15319fb.jpg Price: $9.95

We decided to read this book aloud as a group. I really liked how the book was broken up into different sections; Life Science, Earth and Space Science, Physical and Chemical Science, General Science, there is a bonus section and then a excerpt of One Minute Mysteries: 65 Mysteries You Solve With Math! Guess who will be buying the Math book??!?!

Each story is really short, and I love that the front page tells the mystery and the answer is on the back of the page. So I would read the short excerpt and then ask the girls to solve the mystery. After we had discussed what we though the answer was I would turn the page and finish the story. It was really cool to “see” how much the girls had retained from previous lessons in science. There were quiet a few mysteries that sparked their interest and so off we would go to find answers to questions that had stemmed from these short mysteries. The one change the girls would have liked was if the stories were a little longer and if the pictures were in color. Besides that they LOVED it and can’t wait to start the Math version.

Eric & Natalie Yoder, this father-daughter team has got a winner here. This book is a great read for all ages, Leann age 7 enjoyed listening to the stories and figuring out the answers. We would recommend this book!!

Science Naturally has graciously offered our readers a special coupon: you can use coupon code 3SPEC to purchase any 3 books on the website for $19.95 plus $2.95 shipping. (a $12.90 savings). Pick out your books here!!

Home School in the Woods ~ Review

 photo HSitW-NewLOGO-website_zps0d8de564.gif

This past month we have been learning all about the Great Empires. We have been reviewing the Great Empires Activity Study from Home School in the Woods. We received the instant download, which includes the different empires starting with Egypt and goes through the USA. We printed up the timeline and the figures that go with each period.

 photo PHOTO-GreatEmpires-COMBINED-web-sm_zpsb1b34063.jpg

   Prices : Download $18.95 or a CD $19.95

Each Empire comes with a text page that gives you a overview of that particular empire. There is a projects page that directs you as to which other pages you will need to print for each day.

We used this study each day. The first week we worked on Ancient Egypt, on the 1st day we printed up everything and went over the timeline, then we read the text. On the 2nd day we did some mapping, on the 3rd day watched a documentary on Ancient Egypt, on the 4th day we did some cooking egyptcooking and then on the 5th day we made a Cartouche complete with hieroglyphs.

This activity guide is a wonderful Unit Study!! It is so easy to use that anyone could do it and it is so much fun!! The girls can’t wait until we do world history each day. Here I was nervous about teaching them about world history since I wasn’t sure about what to teach and now I don’t have to worry about it. All I need to do is print up some pages, read a bit about that empire and then do some fun hands on projects.

The weeks that followed included; Ancient Greece, Ancient Rome, China. And of course they can’t wait to find out what going on with these empires; Arab-Muslims, Japan, Vikings, Mongols, England, Spain, Russia, France, Germany and the Untied States! We decided to follow the timeline and learn about each empire according to it but you could pick and choose which empire you wanted.

This guide is recommended for elementary ages. If you wanted to use it for middle school ages I would recommend using more of the Addition Reading Material list.

ABeCeDarin ~ Review

 photo abecedarianlogo_zps0ce11eae.jpg

How do you feel about teaching phonics? Since Amber learned to read while being in public school I didn’t have such a problem with it. But now Leann is a totally different picture.  Leann would rather be doing cartwheels or jumping on the trampoline instead of doing school work.GEDC0431

So when ABeCeDarian Company offered their product for review, I was like “Pick Me, Pick Me!!!”

ABeCeDarian is divided into 4 levels. It starts with nonreaders in Kindergarten and goes through to a 5th/6th grade reading level.

We received the package and of course the girls are super excited and meet the mailman in the driveway to take procession of the package. Then comes the begging of who can open it. We received levels A & B:

Student Workbook A1
Teacher Manual A1
Student Workbook A2
Teacher Manual A2
Set of 10 Storybooks
Student Workbook B1
Teacher Manual B1
ABeCeDarian Aesop

Price: The teacher’s manuals costs $28.50, and each of the student workbooks costs $12.25. The storybook collection is a set of 10 soft cover readers and costs $21.50.

 photo storybooks_zpsd70a2e5a.jpg

Prices:  The Teacher’s Manual B1 costs $25.50, the Student Workbook B1 costs $10.25, and the Aesop reader costs $2.50.

 photo aesop_zpse1629279.jpg

First thing I take the Teacher’s Manuel and start reading the 42 pages of tiny print, well maybe it isn’t so tiny and I need to get my eyes checked, but after reading 42 pages of instructions I felt ready. I printed up the the materials needed (a free download). And set up our schedule, they recommend 4-5 times a week at 15-30 minutes a session, but we soon realized that the schedule is very adaptable. Each lesson is scripted so it makes it very easy for anyone to teach phonics. Since we have tried other phonics programs (without success) some of the lessons we were able to move through quickly, also I started Leann on A-1 because I wanted her to really get the feel of the program from the beginning.
Lessons consist of playing a word game, saying the sounds, writing the letters, and then progress in reading sentences, and spelling words. You can check out a lesson sample here.
So after reviewing ABeCeDarian, Leann is reading!! She doesn’t particularly like to read, but she is reading and let me tell you the first time she sat down on her own and read from the Bible, she had gotten tired of waiting for someone to help her read her daily devotions and decided to try to read it on her own, once she realized that she had actually read the words and understood what it had said she broke out in this big grin and said I DID IT!!!

A Journey Through Learning~Review

Journey through Learning Logo photo journeythroughlearninglogo_zps21c38856.jpg

Remember when I told you all about how we love lapbooking? If not check it out here. We were thrilled to be picked to check out a few lapbooks from A Journey Through Learning. We were given 4 titles to choose from:Letters, Numbers and Shapes (ages 3-5), The Earth (grades 1-4), Knights and Castles (grades 2-7), Astronomy and Space (grades 2-7).

Prices: Vary depending on which product you choose but I have listed the prices of the ones that I used. There are freebies, Express books for $1, and supplements for Classical Conversations and Apologia.

So we picked:

Knights and Castles photo knightsandcastles_zps3e1f0ab1.jpegPrices: Instant Download-13.00, CD-14.00, Printed-21.00

We really enjoyed learning about Knights and Castles, this is a 51 page study guide that requires 3 file folders. Everything is all put together for you all you need to do is print, cut and paste. Super Easy for 1st timers!! We took about a week to do this lapbook.

Letters, Numbers and Shapes photo Lettersnumbersandshapes_zps1d7d968f.jpegPrices: Instant Download-13.00, CD-14.00, Printed-20.00, Assembled-29.00

Letters, Numbers and Shapes we used with a 2 year old that we were babysitting. My girls love doing lapbooks so when the opportunity arose Amber asked to do a lapbook with little man. See as I had just received the files I quickly printed everything up, she sat down and cut everything out and pasted with him. Then she went over the letter, numbers, and the different shapes. Virtually no prep needed, just print and go. We did this lapbook in 1 day, actually a couple of hours!!

Seriously anybody can do this. Nancy & Paula have done all the hard work. They have put everything together for you with simple to read instruction that comes with pictures, for all of you who need to make sure it is just right.

If you have tried lapbooking before, this is your chance. Or if you have tried it before and thought its too much work, I urge you to check out A Journey Through Learning!! But don’t just take my word on it.

 photo AdventusLogo_zps301dbe63.gif

Whenever I had heard someone talk about music lessons for their kids, I would turn green with envy. I have wanted to have the girls take piano lessons for years but as we all know being from a 1 income family we have to pick and choose what we can and can’t do. So when Adventus offered us the opportunity to review MusIQ HomeSchool I was over the moon!! Piano lessons at home, yea!

From Adventus website: “The seven-year curriculum includes 20+ levels for beginner to advanced intermediate piano students. The Lesson Plans include detailed lesson objectives, activity sheets, quizzes and assessments plus hundreds of helpful tips from experienced educators.” photo musiqhomeschool-software_zps4cb3ceea.jpg

I wondered if our keyboard was even compatible, and thankfully it is. I just needed to buy the adapter and we were all set. We were so excited to start practicing. Neither of the girls had taken any lesson so I figured we would start them both on Children’s Music Journey Volume 1. We soon realized that Amber even though she has not taking any lessons before was able to move up to Children’s Music Journey Volume 2 without any problems.

Set up was a bit confusing and there was a few hiccups along the way, for some reason Leann’s computer which has Windows 7 would not run the program, instead I had to installed it on Amber’s computer which has Windows 8. We were all set for the 1st lesson and for some reason the keyboard and the computer didn’t want to communicate right, so after a few minutes of frustration, I switched the cables around and it worked great. Funny thing is during the first lesson, Beethoven tells the student that he has trouble hearing, and when the computer and keyboard were not communicating, Leann says “Well he did say he had trouble hearing, maybe he just can’t hear me!” I was a bit confused as how the lessons went, and I was a bit discouraged when I had to go searching for the lessons. Maybe it was just me not knowing, everyone knows how I “just need to know everything” lol but once I figured it out it was smooth sailing.

Actually once I set it up there was no need for me to even be in the room with the girls as they did their lessons. I LOVED how they had a famous composers to teach them the new lesson, then they would get to go into the Practice Room with Ms. Melody to review what the teacher (composer) taught, after that they would get to play games in the Game Room, as they progress more games are unlocked. Then it was off to the Impro Room, by this point the lesson is completed, and you can spend a few minutes reviewing what was taught and doing the assigned worksheets. Actually we didn’t use the worksheets much, seeing as my girls don’t like to color and really the recommended age is 4-6 for CMJ-1.

The girls both LOVED this program and actually ask all the time to play the piano, even on Saturdays!! I would recommend this program. We plan to keep the program going even after our review period is over. I let the girls work at their own pace, even though Adventus recommends a lesson a week, I figured that since they are little bit older they could advance when they felt that they could move to the next lesson.

You will need a MIDI piano keyboard (a digital keyboard that connects to your computer via a USB cable or a ‘MIDI to USB’ adapter)

Early Curriculum: Windows 7/Vista/XP/2000 or Macintosh OSX and an internet connection.

Multi-level Curriculum: Windows 7/Vista/XP/2000 and an internet connection.

The Art of Poetry ~ CAP ~ Review

I have already told you about how I didn’t think I could write, but let me tell you I just knew I couldn’t teach anything to do with poetry. I had such a hard time in high school and college trying to understand what the poet was trying to say that I just never “got it”. So when the opportunity came up to review The Art of Poetry from  Classical Academic Press I thought maybe this could be the answer to teaching poetry.

Then the fated day came, we received our package. Included in the package was the student text, a teacher’s guide and the first disc of the DVD (with Chapters 1-2).   The Art of Poetry is set up so that the student can work independently, if you buy the DVD Set, which I recommend if poetry is not your forte.  The book is broken up into 16 chapters and the schedule/timetable is very adaptable. The age range is advanced middle school and high school.

The Art of Poetry is a great program that really breaks down the compilation of a poem. The lessons start with the basics and later digs into the structure and composition of a poem. The class work for each chapter is explained completely, so if you don’t get the DVD’s you can still teach poetry with the Teachers edition. At the end of the chapter the poems are explained in detail and activates are given, you could do all or just a few, depending on how intense you are making the course. By the end of the textbook the student should have a solid base of knowledge that can help them see, feel, and understand the poets feelings and ideas and the structure of each type of poem.

I really wish my school had taught The Art of Poetry when I was in school. I am just thankful that I get to relearn so much now, as a homeschooling Mama!! I would recommend this product. Amber, who is in sixth grade, struggled at first but I blame that on myself since I was so reluctant to approach the subject of poetry.

Here is the break down on the products.Photobucket
